Derivation of ‘Cubic World at Sea’ Carved grilles (or tracery) are a feature of Indian, Islamic and Gothic architecture. The Islamic patterns at the 16th century Tomb of Muhammad Ghaus in Gwalior combine a series of geometric devices which provide just a faint glimpse of the outside world. This was the starting point for Cubic World at Sea – a bringing together of these same Islamic traceries to produce a dreamlike vision. One particular photo of the Mosque has been manipulated and subjected to multiple additions so that what was initially a view of the outside world has become a mystical, floating internal landscape. |
