Jain Lions at Play

The rococo-style 19th century Shree Sheetalnathji Temple and Gardens in Kolkata (Calcutta) is an extravaganza of glittering decoration and colour bordering on being kitsch.  But, like many Jain temples, it is a welcoming and joyful place.  Lions guarding the entrances roar and grimace but fail to inspire fear.  In this artwork they have been transported to a mythical fractal landscape where, for once, they can neglect their duties as guards and enjoy a period of relaxation and play.

This picture is dedicated to my first grandchild, Luna.
