Reflections on Nandi On Chamundi Hill overlooking Mysore, a giant garlanded Nandi (Shiva's bull) reigns supreme attended by his own priest. Carved from a single piece of black granite in 1659, this Nandi is the biggest and most revered in India. Never likely to take to the air itself, in spite of Shiva's encouragement, I have enjoyed translating and multiplying the bull's image into the most unexpected and lightweight of contexts. |
